Chocolate Chip Challah Bread

Ellie’s Chocolate Chip Challah Recipe (makes 2 challahs)

Ingredients:

  • Sugar
  • Water
  • Eggs
  • Active dry yeast
  • Vegetable oil
  • Chocolate chips
  • All-purpose flour

Procedure:

1.)  Add 1 T of active dry yeast to a large mixing bowl.

2.)  Then, add ½ cup of white sugar to the yeast.

3.)  Add 1 1/3 cups of cold + 1/3 cup boiling water. Mix and let rest for about ten minutes.

4.)  Add 2 eggs. Do not beat until oil gets added.

5.)  Add ½ cup of vegetable oil.

6.)  Measure 2 1/3 cups of flour in a separate bowl and pour into mixture.

7.)  Add 1 T kosher salt on top of flour and mix thoroughly.

8.)  Add  1 2/3 more cups of flour.

9.)  Knead (FOLD and POUND!) and add 1 1/3 more cups of water. Knead again and add 2/3 cup more flour.

10.) Divide dough into 6 balls and flatten slightly.

11.) Add chocolate chips and fold each portion of dough into the shape of a wonton by pinching the sides.

12.) Form into 6 logs and then braid. {braiding tutorial}

13.) Egg wash the entire challah with a brush and one egg. Bake at 400 degrees for 25 min (or until golden).
