A Day In LA

After a busy week preparing for my brother’s Bar Mitzvah, I decided that I needed a break! SO… yesterday, Alana, Ali and I went to LA to do some shopping. Breakfast was my usual bowl of oats with bananas on top 🙂

I crave this breakfast at least three days a week. It’s boring, but ALWAYS satisfying!

Sometimes, I’ll add a splash of low-fat milk and a few raisins on top! Just to mix it up a little bit!

Old Fashioned Oats & Bananas

  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 a banana
  1. Bring water to boil and add in the oats.
  2. Cook for about five minutes and make sure all of the water is absorbed.
  3. Then, mix in the brown sugar.
  4. Slice 1/2 a banana and place on top of oats.
Note: This oatmeal recipe has a thick consistency, so add more water if you like yours thinner.
When we got to LA the first stop was KITSON! It’s one of my favorite stores.

After not finding anything… which is very unusual for me… we were starving, so we decided to stop at Jack n’ Jill’s Bakery, Cafe for lunch. Getting there was quite the adventure… an iPhone with navigation is much-needed for next time!

We all custom ordered the tuna sandwich. Mine had albacore tuna salad, cucumbers, tomato, and cheddar cheese on cracked whole wheat bread. YAY for starch, protein, and vegetable all in one! Avocado for some healthy fat on the side 🙂

Some warm cornbread… Mmm.

The check came in a little glass jar with three Tootsie pops! How cute!

After lunch, we walked around Robertson Blvd some more (there are TONS of cute clothing stores on this street!) but still didn’t find anything I really liked!

On the way home, I picked up some ground turkey and whole wheat penne pasta for dinner. My mom made homemade meat sauce for the pasta. I can’t believe I forgot to snap a picture! We also had broccoli and a small salad.

We spent some time talking with the family for a good hour after eating which was a lot of fun. I’ll miss them when I’m at school in Arizona 😦

Then we made COOKIES!! As usual, I wanted to use a healthified recipe. Sometimes my tweaks work and sometimes they don’t. This one didn’t. And Alana just HAD to  make a back-up batch that we had in the freezer just in case.

Guess which ones were healthy?

The ones on the left! These were Banana Oatmeal Chocolate Chip and the ones on the right were just plain chocolate chip cookies. I adapted the Banana Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies by using half spelt flour and half whole wheat. (Spelt is another type of whole grain flour.) I also pulsed the oats in a food processor to change the texture a little bit. Unfortunately, they ended up being a tad dense and thick, but they still tasted delicious!

After dessert, I stayed up late watching tv then decided to go to sleep. I realized I was super tired from today’s festivities.

Now that my break is over, it’s time to continue the party planning. Have a great day!

What is your go to chocolate chip cookie recipe?
